Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, or Honu, are considered symbols of good luck, endurance and long life in the sun – not surprising as they are one of the oldest living creatures. To Hawaiians, having a Honu show up as one’s Aumaka, or guardian spirit, is considered something truly special. The Honu Mandala is a perfect complement to “Oceanside”, Sherman Williams 2018 color of the year.
Honu have been listed as a threatened species since 1978 due to overfishing. By making art with their photographs rather than their shells, I’m hoping to not only share the beauty of these gentle creatures but also remind everyone that the natural wonders of our world are fragile and need our protection.
